Evolution of Whales Essay Example for Free
Evolution of Whales Essay Since historical timeââ¬â¢s organisms gradually undergo change in all body aspects for example body size, shape, complexity of organs and slight changes in genetic material. The changes are minor in a generation; accumulate with the continuity of generations with the overall differences producing major changes. In most cases a group of organisms arise from a common ancestor for example whales, dolphins and porpoises evolved from mammals that lived on land for instance pakicetids and mesonychids. Whales are also thought to have a common ancestor with hippopotamus, deer and camels. Whale ancestors were terrestrial which as a result of modification in the body parts and organs gave rise to the present day whales. There are many theories that explain the evolution of whales and the most embraced is that of whales evolving from small aquatic animals. The rule of natural selection by Charles Darwin dictates that only the fit organisms survive. This rule has applied to the evolution of whales since those that were unable to cope with competition became extinct. Most of the ancestors of whales were obtained through fossil study (paleontological evidence) of both terrestrial and aquatic organismsââ¬â¢ remnants excavated from Australia and Pakistan. Some of the examples of whale ancestors are sinonyx, pakicetids, ambulocetids, rhodocetids, basilosaurus, dorudon, squalodon, mammalodon colliveri, janjucetus hunderi and Harrisonââ¬â¢s whale. Statement on whales Whales are the largest living mammals that inhabit aquatic environment. Whales can dive to depths of about 3000 meters and have to go back to the surface to breath. Like most terrestrial mammals whales give birth, suckle and nurse their young ones for around six months. They do not have skin glands, tear glands and olfactory senses. They receive signals through vibrations to the periodic and auditory bullae formed by fusion of skull bones. The blue whale; one of the whale species is the largest creatures that has ever lived on earth. The whale is subdivided into several species namely; sperm whale, blue whale (mentioned above), orcas (killer whales), and pilot whales. Some of these whale species have become extinct through natural selection as postulated by Charles Darwin in his theory ââ¬Å"the origin of species by means of natural selectionâ⬠. The blue whale is in the sub- order baleen whale and has long slender body shaded blue at some parts of the body. They feed on krill and only hunt in areas with concentration of krill. They mostly mate during autumn. Blue whales give birth to young whales in water weighing about two tones. The blue whales suckle their young ones till they are six months old. These whales are sexually mature at the age of around ten years. They are known to attain the age of about eighty years and their only predator is the orca or the killer whale. The population of whales has been decreasing in the recent years because of large scale whale hunting. Blue whales communicate to other whales especially during courtship, locating prey, maintenance of individual territory and maintenance of social organization by making some sounds about 165 decibels.

Critical Analysis of This Boys Life by Tobias Wolff Essay -- Analys
This Boy's Life is the autobiographical account of teenager. Toby and his mother's search for financial stability and a peaceful life. Tobyââ¬â¢s family was split down the middle as a child, leaving his father and older brother on the East Coast and, for the most part, uninvolved in Tobyââ¬â¢s life. The story begins when Toby and his mother, Rosemary, leave her abusive boyfriend in Florida to take their chances at becoming rich in the uranium mines in Utah. They are short on money, a theme that continually comes up throughout the book, but full of hope and love for each other. Unfortunately, as they arrive in Utah, they discover the uranium resources have already been bled dry and they must go to Salt Lake City where Rosemary manages to get a job as a secretary. Soon afterwards, the ex-boyfriend follows the pair to Salt Lake City and rejoins their life. His abusive behavior continues and Toby and Rosemary are forced to flee again. This time fate lands them on a bus headed for S eattle. Once in Washington, Rosemary finds a group of female friends who encourage her to start dating, eventually landing her with a relationship and later marriage with yet another abusive man, Dwight. The mother and son pair is in a constant fight for a better way to live in terms of security and stability, but their love and loyalty to each other is solid. Toby seems to show signs of emotional and behavioral disorders in his journey through adolescence. He develops many different distinct personalities at various points to try to evade the harsh realities of his life. In the beginning of the novel, he expresses a... ...ter fighter by tormenting him. Wolff admits that, ââ¬Å"All of Dwight's complaints against me had the aim of giving me a definition of myself. They succeeded, but not in the way I wished. I defined myself in opposition to him. In the past, I had been ready, even when innocent, to believe any evil thing of myself. Now that I had grounds for guilt I could no longer feel it.â⬠His admission of oblivion to his disorder becomes realistic when explained in this context. Despite seeing him repeatedly change his identity, lie, steal, take excessive risks, and act generally wild and out of control at times, the reader somehow still comes out believing in and loving this lost young man. His spirit to survive and loyalty to his mother shine through, forcing readers to recognize, but look past the emotional and behavioral disorders that sometimes hinder his journey towards freedom.

Registering your business name with the state registrar, acquiring a federal tax ID number, researching local zoning and licensing regulations, purchasing insurance pertinent to your needs and establishing banking relationships are critical steps in setting up shop in either venue. While telecommunications equipment, office supplies and a marketing/advertising budget are necessary expenses in both traditional and electronic commerce, a traditional business model has the added overhead of a monthly lease, utilities, staff salaries and benefits, exterior/interior maintenance costs and security systems. An e-business run from a home office utilizes resources that already exist and which are then prorated as deduction Customer Convenience If the weather is bad, the parking is a challenge or the hour is late when inspiration strikes to buy something, an e-business that is open 24/7 often has more appeal to customers than a brick-and-mortar shop located across town and only open five days a week from 10 to 4. Shopping for goods electronically doesnââ¬â¢t just save customers time and energy; it can also save them from paying sales taxes, provide them with more outlets to comparison-shop and eliminate the feeling of being pressured or followed around by a salesperson. Many customers, however, prefer the ability to personally inspect the merchandise, ask for advice and assistance and be able to take their purchases home immediately rather than having to pay shipping costs and wait for delivery. A traditional business satisfies those needs in addition to fostering an environment of trust through personal conversation and face-time. ns for tax purposes.

Coming of Age in New Jersey by Michael Moffatt:
One learns real education in the college of self-education, where oneââ¬â¢s mind is oneââ¬â¢s Principal; oneââ¬â¢s initiative, oneââ¬â¢s Professors. Oneââ¬â¢s hard work, oneââ¬â¢s tutors!à It provides you the correct decision making power. It makes you act. You are able to start a thing; you are also able to finish that thing and achieve your goal. The real education tells you, there is no victory or defeat in life ââ¬âthere is only permanent effort. What are theory text-books after all? They are the storehouse of experiences. True college education must stand the test of its practical application. According to Moffatt it should provide awareness, proper direction and destination to the student, in life. As a new and revealing perspective on the much-studied American college student, the observations contained in the book are highly authentic and path-breaking! Breaking through the facade of higher learning and discovering the actuality of college life (pertaining to the students, professors, and the institution as a whole). The book describes the plight of the American college student, who carries encyclopedia within his brain. He goes on accumulating knowledge, and doesnââ¬â¢t know much about its applicationââ¬âmeaning thereby failure to perform to right things at the right time. Students donââ¬â¢t enter college just to study the prescribed textbooks relating to their syllabusââ¬âthey are spending the very precious part, of the formative years of their life in the portals of college. à Every student has the problem, peculiar to his circumstances and the level of his progression in life. They learn what is individualism, what is friendship, the community feelings, color and race, ethnic problems, intellectual achievements, work and play and above all sex and gender related problems. The student is exposed to new situations all through his years in the college. The author is a faculty member in the Anthropology department at Rutgers University. He did his college studies twice. The objectives of his two attempts were different. On the first occasion, perhaps it was pure studyââ¬âown career-oriented approach. At the second attempt, he was studying the students. Not what they study, but how they study, what they study! The old-guard was a fresher again, as a very senior student. He lived in the dorm, with the students. Could there by ay better method, for gathering authentic notes for his intended study? This he did, 20 years after his graduation. Moffatt realized that the young college student was a growing human plant. In the heart, he revolted against the prevailing educational system in America, severed from Nature and stifling all individuality. Moffatt had practical ideals to mold the education system. He advocated for new types of training and fearless experiments. Educational innovations for the college students need to become more numerous and more courageous, he advocated. When his second term as a student was over, Moffatt, offered his preliminary results for further scrutiny and comments by the students. The feedback obtained from the undergraduates, provided valuable data to refine his initial observations. He got more information from their perspective, and unique interpretations, that provided more creditability to the book. The book, in a way is jointly authored by the Professor and the students. The studentââ¬â¢s actions, feelings, and thoughts about college (them giving more importance to the social world than the academic); Moffatt( as a student for the second time) makes an interesting observation, how the various officials, employees, professors etc. only knew the partial truth about the functioning of the college, not the whole truth. He writes, ââ¬Å"The College was a very complicated place, made more complicated by its inclusion in a bigger and even more confusing university. Very few administrators understood all of itââ¬âeven its formal organizationââ¬âlet alone how it actually worked. Most campus adults did not even try; they simply did their best to grasp those small parts of the college and the university that they needed to understand.â⬠(Moffat, 1989, p. xv (preface) ââ¬Å"I no longer understood my studentsâ⬠ââ¬â¢ says Prof. Moffatt. There was no feeling of solidarity and responsibility. Exercise of self-reliance and individuality was not encouraged. Stern regard for duty, action without motivated desires, sacrifice and self-respect as well respect for others, were absent. The student was willing to be influenced by the impact of materialistic civilization totally, and the internet revolution did leave deep impact on him. Academic dignity and the great purpose of nobility of human life were sadly lacking. The distant and uncommunicative relationship between the students and professors and how that plays a part in the studentââ¬â¢s actions and beliefs in/about college (affects the development of the students.) The study revealed many interesting factors. It brought to light the limited knowledge the students had about the structure/hierarchy of the teaching staff and their duties and responsibilities. The students never knew how Professors spent their time after the actual study hours, and about their research, thinking and the department politics. He writes, ââ¬Å"Most students were not sure of the relation between the two most immediate authorities in their lives, the dean of students and the dean of Rutgers College. And very few of them could name any of the higher-level university officials between these two deans at the bottom of the administration and the president of Rutgers University at the top.â⬠(Moffat, 1989, p.25) As for the Professors, they were not aware of what the students need to do every semesterââ¬âhow to budget their time against the time and space demands. Conclusion: What is the true purpose of education? Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel-prize winning poet from India puts it beautifully: ââ¬Å"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, Where knowledge is free, Where the word has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls, Where words come from the depth of truth, â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake!ââ¬âeducation must lead an individual, a student to such height level of evolution. Three Men in a Boat Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Three Men in a Boat - Essay Example I crawled out a decrepit wreck.â⬠This situation happens when one tries to assimilate the knowledge on a subject on which one is not competent of assimilating! The contents of this book, written about a century ago are prophetic as for the thinking of majority of the humankind and the medical fraternity (especially the western medical system.) Even for small ailments people visit the doctors and the doctors create a grim situation on small health issues to extract as many dollars from the patients, as is possible! The overall merit of the book is-- the serious issues are commented in a humorous style. It contains lots of practical philosophical advice, told in a subtle manner. The three men in the boat are George, Harris and the narrator, who are great hypochondriacsââ¬âthey are convinced that they are suffering from every type of diseases, even though there is nothing wrong with their physical equipment as such. Even in the so-called grim situation of their lives, their-sel f assessment about the state of health evokes ironic laughter. Jerome writes, ââ¬Å"I sat and pondered. I thought what an interesting case I must be from a medical point of view, what an acquisition I should be to a class! Students would have no need to ââ¬Å"walk the hospitals,â⬠if they had me. I was a hospital in myself.
